Contact Form 7 Captcha – Google Recaptcha Add-on

There was a time when webmasters were excited to receive an email through their contact forms. It was a time when only humans filled out those forms and the inquiries were legitimate.

Today, those legitimate queries still exist, but they are often just a tiny tiny fraction of the total number of emails you receive.

All the rest are spam…

Spammers use programs called Spam Bots to automatically find and fill out contact forms. No bueno for webmaster’s sanity.

To help fight the rise of spam the captcha was invented. A captcha is a simple question or task that only humans could do at the time. Now a lot of captchas can be solved by spam bots too.

Google Recaptcha takes the concept of the captcha to a new level.

Google Recaptcha easily integrates with Contact Form 7 and it’s connected to Google servers.

This means that Google could create some cool features.

First, there are times when you don’t even need to fill out the captcha. Based on your online activity Google knows if you’re a human. So, if Google judges you to be a human and you are presented a Google Recaptcha, all you see is a check box. Easy.

Other times you’ll be presented with a task. But the task serves two purposes, first is the validate you’re human and the second is to improve Google services.

Google has servers and algorithms that do a lot of data crunching, but sometimes they need some human guidance.

So if a Google algorithm is processing Google maps data, but the computer can’t accurately recognize the address it will be sent out to a Recaptcha.

A human, maybe you, will be presented with the task of validating the address. Which helps improve Google Maps.

Google uses this same concept for converting printed books into a digital library. And they even us it to help improve Artifical Intelligence.

It’s pretty cool stuff.
